Stages of an Assessment
1
Subjective Assessment
A subjective assessment allows the therapist to obtain vital information about the patient's condition, pain, and general health. Initially, a medical history form is to be completed clearing the patients of any contraindications to treatment. From this a more extensive history regarding the injury sustained will be carried out, allowing a further understanding of the patient's body and goals.
2
Objective Assessment
After completing a full subjective history, range of motion tests can be completed. This will consist of active range of motion, passive range of motion, then finishing with strength testing. Additionally if required, special tests can be performed to rule out damaged areas and establish possible injury mechanisms. From this, moving on to palpation of the injured area and surrounding muscles, identifying areas of tightness or soreness.
3
Treatment Plan
Treatment plans will vary depending on the injury sustained. They may include, but are not limited to:
-
Sports massage
-
Joint and spinal mobilisations
-
Mobilisations with movement
-
Mobilising and stretching exercises
-
Strengthening exercises
As part of the treatment plan, a set of tailored exercises will be provided with specific reps and sets.
